Walk leader Steve Piotrowski lead an enthusiastic crowd who had already clocked Barn owl, Marsh Harriers nest building and Blackcap whilst standing in the car park off into the marshes and straight into the explosive bursts of a Cetti’s Warbler. Wren, Robin, Dunnock and Blue Tit were all added without another step being taken and as the differences between these songs were being explained it was noticed that a Little Owls was watching (or listening?) intently from only 10m away. LBB Gull, Magpie, Rook, Crow, Moorhen, Mute Swan, Green Woodpecker, Chaffinch and Yellowhammer were all present before Roger shouted “Snipe” from the back of the line. Further along the path the trees made way to reeds which gave great opportunity to compare the song of Sedge and Willow Warblers and a Grasshopper Warbler could also be heard although a Chiff-chaff did its best to drown out all other sounds. As the walk progressed Mistle Thrush, Starling, Goldfinch, Stock Dove and Mallard were seen or heard. The shout from the back of “Sandwich Tern” had a few people making off towards the visitor centre but alas not breakfast time but a pair overhead. Reed Bunting, Kestrel, Canada Goose, Great Tit, Pheasant, Bullfinch and Jay were noted as well as regular Blackbirds and Wood Pigeon. An open piece of grassland yielded Skylark, Lapwing, Meadow Pipit and Linnet and high in the sky Swallows and Sand Martin could also be seen, 3 Siskin passed over and once located a Blackcap showed very well. On the last leg back to the visitor centre Grey Heron, Egyptian Geese and finally in the car park Sparrowhawk were seen before coffee and excellent hot cross buns courtesy of Kathy Piotrowski and Carol Flory. 33 people enjoyed 49 species on a very informative and enjoyable morning’s walk – a great way to kick off the Easter weekend.
